Basic Rubber Stamping

Rubber stamping can be really enjoyable. Not just the end product but the whole process. You get to explore new ideas and experiment with different things.

I will feature the basic technique of rubber stamping. Will slowly include new ideas once I get the chance to explore and experiment new things, including converting unwanted junk to something useful!

"Ingredients" & Tools

  • pigment ink
  • embossing powder
  • water colour/crayon/colour pencils (whichever you like)
  • white 200gsm paper (it can be any kind of paper/cardstock), I prefer a smoother texture to effectively bring out the embossed effect. A rough or textured paper normally absorbs ink unevenly and the embossing will not be that even
  • woodmounted rubber stamp
  • embossing heat gun

Steps :

1. Evenly dab pigment ink over woodmounted rubber stamp

2. Stamp on paper putting firm even pressure (not body weight) over the stamp

3. Pour over embossing powder, cover the whole stamped picture and slightly shake it to make sure embossing powder spreads nicely and evenly over the pigment ink. Due to our humid weather, embossing powder do stick to the paper, you can use a small paint brush to brush off excess.

4. Using heat gun, about 1 - 2 inches apart from the paper, heat the stamped picture, making sure that the embossing powder is melted and the embossed effect is visible. Do not over heat as the raised effect of embossing powder will start to flatten! It's also important to heat it gradually by moving the heat gun all over the picture. By placing the heat gun in one spot to heat one single area will tend to overheat and turn paper to yellow/light brown.

5. Colouring is my favourite! I use soluble crayon which has a richer tone and can use it like water colour.
